چکیده

Many of the disabling fea tures of leprosy ~re caused by peripheral nerve impairment involving both sensory and motor modalities. Pathologic changes in an affected nerve are usually seen at a site where the nerve passes over a bone or joint, or where the nerve is superficial. In the arm the most commonly involved nerves, in order of frequency, are the ulnar at the elbow and the median at the wrist. In the leg they are the posterior tibial at the ankle and the common peroneal at the knee. The ulnar nerve becomes involved most often at the elbow just proximal to the ulnar groove and, less frequently, a t the wrist (1) . Motor nerve conduction velocity shldies have become recognized, in the past five or six years, as important aids in assessing peripheral nerve dysfunction. To date, many studies have been made relative to a wide variety of neuropathies. There have not been any systematic studies, however, concerning motor nerve conduction in patients with leprosy. Magora et oZ. (') noted that they have been evaluating conduction times, but did not have sufficient data to report. As part of a larger study of the rehabilitation of persons with leprosy, the present study was conceived to find methods for detecting peripheral nerve involvement sufficiently early to pre ent disability by

Prevalence of Concurrent Disorders of Ulnar Nerve Entrapment at the Elbow and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Ahvaz Imam Khomeini Hospital During 2009 to 2012

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most well-known and frequent form of median nerve entrapment, and accounts for 90% of all entrapment neuropathies. Entrapment neuropathies of the ulnar nerve are relatively common with ulnar neuropathy at the elbow more prevalent than ulnar neuropathy at the wrist. The diagnosis of ulnar neuropathy at the elbow is usually confirmed in a relatively straight – ...

Normal Values of Median, Ulnar and Radial Nerves Conduction in Healthy Adults (20-59 years)

ABSTRACT The object of this study is determination of normative values of nerve conduction studies (NCS) among the population of Guilan Province. We selected 216 at the ages of 20-59yr on the basis of their medical histories and examination , and on condition that they had no factors or diseases interfering with nerve conduction by convenience sampling method. In this cross-sectional study, t...

Extensive sonographic ulnar nerve enlargement above the medial epicondyle is a characteristic sign in Hansen’s neuropathy

OBJECTIVE Earlier studies have shown sonographic enlargement of the ulnar nerve in patients with Hansen's neuropathy. The present study was performed to determine whether sonography or electrophysiological studies can detect the specific site of ulnar nerve pathology in leprosy. METHODS Eighteen patients (thirty arms) with Hansen's disease and an ulnar neuropathy of whom 66% had borderline tu...

A Study of the Conduction Velocity of Sensory Fibers 'of the Ulnar Nerve in leprosy!

Measurement of peripheral nerve conduction in man dates back to von HelmhQltz ( 1:' . Ili) and now forms a part of routine clinical examination in various neuropathic conditions. Prominent in this group is leprosy, but it is surprising to note in an editorial by Wade ( 18) that as late as 1954 sufficient information on the conduction velocity of peripheral nerves in leprosy was not available. I...
